Our Story

A pub with two heritages.

Built on countryside ritual. Reimagined through the soul of Indian cooking.

The Beginning

From South India to Langham.

When we took over The Shepherd & Dog, we made one promise: keep the warmth and welcome of a proper village pub, and cook the food we grew up loving.

So our menu sits between two kitchens: the Essex country pub and the family kitchens of India. Both are built on generosity, and both, at their best, keep people around a table for hours.

The Kitchen

Two chefs, two heritages.

Our menu has two sides, and so does our kitchen.

Andy Jones - Head Chef

Andy leads the British side of our menu. He brings more than thirty years of cooking across premium restaurants and Michelin-standard kitchens, including several head chef roles. His roasts, gravies and grill are the backbone of our British menu.

“The Shepherd & Dog has an exciting future. I want us to be known for outstanding food, genuine hospitality and a warm atmosphere, and to be a team that’s proud of what we achieve together.”

Yethin “Yeti” Bhavanashi - Senior Chef

Yethin leads the Indian side of our menu. He is an experienced Indian chef who cooks to fine-dining standards, with real respect for authentic flavour. He treats spice the way a great pub kitchen treats butter: with care, never just for show.

“I want The Shepherd & Dog to be a destination for exceptional food and hospitality, a place guests come back to for the dishes and for the whole experience.”
What We Believe

Three principles.

Local First

We’re Langham’s pub before anything else: a place to meet neighbours, bring the family and the dog, and feel at home over a pint or a full dinner. Our meat comes from John Coleman Butchers in neighbouring Boxted, and our fresh produce from Anglia Produce in Lawford.

Two Kitchens One Menu

British pub classics and authentic Indian dishes, cooked with equal care, so everyone at the table finds something they love.

Hospitality

Warm welcomes, no airs. Friendly, unhurried service for everyone who walks through the door. A pub first, always.
